Having already reviewed the locked blade whittling knife by Flexcut, I thought it’d be a good idea to go over the folding Flexcut Whittlin Jack knife since it, much like the fixed blade, is a good alternative for a beginning wood carver. With over 50 customer reviews and a 4.8 out of 5 star rating, it definitely deserves its reputable credibility. This flexcut whittlin jack sitting at 3 ounces is especially unique with it’s aluminum frame and veneer inlay stretching 4″ from base to top that shields 2 blades: a 1-1/2″ detail knife and a 2″ roughing knife.

Best Product Features

There are a number of well appreciated assets to this knife that I believe many wood carvers would commonly agree on so I’ll throw the best features into bullet points for this review:

  1. Very sharp – After looking at the comfortable structure of the handle itself, I moved into the sharpness and edge retention of the blade. Right out of the box it is scary sharp and honestly unless you chip this blade, you’ll only really need is stropping compound to keep this sucker wicked sharp. With a roughing knife that’s approximately 2″ and a detail knife at 1-1/2″ any carver would admit to its convenience.
  2. Ideal handle shape – From tip to tip, when closed, the aluminum handle is 4″ making it very easy to carry around in a pocket or not take up much room in a bag. The added design with the veneer inlay is a nice touch on top of the fact that the slight bow structure of the knife creates a comfortable hold for extended carving periods.
  3. Lightweight – Weighing in at just 3 ounces anyone can see that this product is meant to be carried around with you for outdoor wood carving endeavors.
  4. Long edge retention – I enjoyed this quality since getting out sharpening tools can be tedious and even more so if it takes more time than usual to sharpen your tools. That’s not that case with this whittling jack, although I will recommend using the Flexcut Gold stropping compound to keep it sharp every 30 minutes of carving.

This is a finely-crafted knife from the Sweden makers at Morakniv, and an excellent choice for anyone in the market for a laminated steel blade tool. The feeling of the oiled handle along with the sharp edge are ideal for whittling.

The mora 105 knife is razor-sharp out of the box, and is easily sharpened with a strop or a barber’s stone. The oiled birch wood handle gleams and stays shiny even after continued use, and its size is ideal for jobs like cedar shakes, bowls, or spoons. Though many may assume that its longer handle would make intricate cuts more difficult, the lightweight birch is good for detailed carving projects.

This great-looking knife is a good purchase for most users, from beginners to experienced woodcarvers. Though there are a few slight disadvantages that I will list below, the agility of the knife, the price, and the beauty of the rose pakka handle make it a solid consideration, but the size tends to be ideal for smaller hands and sharpening the blade can be a little tedious. With an 81% rating of 4 stars or more, the Fury Nobility Folding Knife is worth using.

This knife is small enough to fit nicely in your pocket, but large enough to be versatile for most of your woodcarving needs. Its small size also allows it to cut cleanly and work well with minute details while whittling, but the unique shape and intricate wood handle of this knife may be its best feature outside of its pragmatic uses. Mora 120 Wood Carving Knife Review

The Morakniv 120 is an especially interesting option for many reasons I will soon cover.

This particular knife has a short enough bevel so you can achieve details when whittling. I would recommend the Morakniv 106 to go with this since it used for shaving off larger material than the 120.

One of the first things I noticed that I thoroughly appreciated about this knife is not only the quality of it for the price, but the handle. You can see in the picture that the oiled birch wood handle has a thick center body and thins out on either side, this is especially ideal when carving for an extended period of time since it fits very comfortably in the hand. Not only that, but since the handle isn’t painted at all it doesn’t cause blisters. It comes with a plastic sheath that can be attached to your belt. The overall length is 165 mm, roughly 6 1/2″, and the blade is 60 mm. There’s distinct line that divides the two steels used for this product. Being a laminated steel it has a high carbon steel for the core sandwiched between two layers of allow steel. Comes wicked sharp right from the factory, and stupid easy to sharpen.

Flexcut is a brand well known and still relatively young compared to a lot of other knife carving companies of it’s kind, but by no means is it to be overlooked. If you’re looking at this particular knife for whittling, you could either be a veteran carver or a beginner since this blade appeals to the masses in it’s quality.

The Flexcut cutting knife specializes in whittling projects. With its high carbon steel blade and out-of-the-box razor sharp edge, it makes cutting wood feel like shaving butter. The hand honed ergonimic ash handles offer a comfortable posture for your hand, even after using it for hours. It features a 1-1/8″ flexible blade making it optimal for medium to small whittling projects. With over 550 customer reviews, it has been given a 4.5 out of 5 rating on Amazon. The product was approved so much that 86% gave it 4 stars or above. You’ll notice the affordable price, which seems pretty odd compared to others of it’s kind. I believe it has to do with the wood the handle is made out of since the blade is good quality, but when the handle is made out of cheaper wood it can cause problems which brings me to the disadvantages.
